Cricket South Africa President Chris Nenzani resigns after turbulent reign
Cricket South Africa (CSA) President Chris Nenzani resigned from his position just weeks before the governing body’s annual general meeting.
Nenzani, who was also the Chairman of the board of directors of CSA, tendered his resignation on Saturday with immediate effect.
Nenzani had been the head of CSA since February 2013 and led it “with dedication and astutely”, CSA said in a statement on Monday.
“On behalf of Cricket South Africa’s Members Council and the board of directors we thank Mr. Nenzani for his contributions to Cricket South Africa and for being a loyal servant to the game of cricket for over 20 years. We wish him well in his future endeavours, and we are sure that he will continue to contribute to the game of cricket,” CSA said.
CSA named Vice President Beresford Williams as acting president until a permanent replacement will be appointed at the AGM which is expected to take place on September 5.
Nenzani served a scandal-hit additional year as CSA president from 2019 following a request as his mandated two three-year terms had been completed.
That period witnessed a dismal performance by South Africa at the Cricket World Cup and a tour of India. Additionally, a number of board members resigned, sponsors left CSA and Thabang Moroe was suspended as CEO due to allegations of misconduct. CSA was also embroiled in an accreditation scandal in which five journalists seen as critical of the organization were banned.
CSA also said separately that suspended chief operations officer Naasei Appiah had been dismissed after the completion of his disciplinary process.
“The presiding officer found Mr Naasaei Appiah guilty of transgressions of a serious nature and his relationship and employment with CSA has therefore been terminated with immediate effect.”
