The number of COVID-19 deaths globally is closing in on the one million mark as some regions continue reporting a resurgence in new cases.
According to data from the United States-based Johns Hopkins University, a total of 995,190 deaths had been reported by Sunday afternoon from 32.9 million infections.
The U.S. remains to the hardest-hit country by the pandemic, having registered 7.08 million cases and 204,550 fatalities.
The figures represent 21.53 percent of the total confirmed cases and 20.55 percent of the global deaths.
Other than the U.S., only India (5.99 million), Brazil (4.72 million) and Russia (1.15 million) have reported more than one million COVID-19 infections.
The Americas have reported the biggest tally of COVID-19 infections, with more than 16.59 million cases shared between North and South America.
Asia has recorded more than 10.26 million cases as Europe has registered over 4.83 million, Africa over 1.46 million and Oceania over 31,000 confirmed infections.
The latest data comes as the world is focusing on its response to the pandemic. Various world leaders have used the opportunity presented by the 2020 United Nations General Assembly to rally for unity in the fight against the virus.
The World Health Organization also continues its calls for consistent health funding and for any approved vaccines to be directed towards the most vulnerable first.
