The number of COVID-19 cases is worryingly increasing across Tunisia as the red line has been reached, a Tunisian health official warned Friday.
“The figures recorded by Tunisia’s committee to confront the COVID-19 for the last three weeks have shown that the number of cases has not decreased,” said Nissaf Ben Alaya, director-general of the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases, in a statement broadcast by the Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM.
She revealed that only 40 percent of Tunisians respect the measures imposed by the government, in particular the compulsory wearing of a mask in public spaces.
The failure to comply with the measures could cause the collapse of the health system, Alaya noted.
According to the health official, an average of five to 10 people need hospitalization per day in Tunisia.
Tunisian Health Ministry on Friday reported 3,751 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 58,029.
The death toll from the virus rose by 100 to 1,253 in the North African country, the ministry said in a statement.
