The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa continue to rise steadily as world health experts warn of a possible deadlier second wave globally.
According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent had reported 1,784,083 confirmed cases by Sunday afternoon, with a death toll of 42,869.
South Africa remains the worst-affected country by the pandemic in Africa, having registered 725,452 infections and 19,276 deaths.
The country accounts for 40 percent of the continent’s caseload and 44.96 percent of its death toll.
Morocco has reported the second-highest caseload after South Africa, with 219,084 infections and 3,695 deaths.
Egypt, with 107,555 infections, in the only other African country that has reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases.
A further look at the COVID-19 statistics shows that a total of nine countries in Africa have reported more than 50,000 cases.
In terms of deaths, seven countries on the continent have recorded more than 1,000 fatalities.
