Court orders release of Mubarak’s sons
An Egyptian court has ordered the release of former president Hosni Mubarak’s sons who were sentenced to three years in jail for corruption.
The court ordered that Alaa and Gamal be released after taking into consideration the time they served since their arrest in 2011, a judicial and defence lawyer said.
Hosni Mubarak was ousted from the presidency by a popular uprising in 2011, after which many of his accomplices and close aides were arrested and prosecuted.
Mubarak’s sons however still await a verdict on an appeal filed against a second sentence of three years each in prison for embezzlement of public funds.
They are also involved in a trial on charges of manipulating the stock exchange.
