A new branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University was opened at Zhengdong New Area in Zhengzhou city, central China’s Henan Province, during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.
The main campus of the hospital and its two branches now cover an area of 500,000 square meters in total and had cost 2.5 billion yuan (roughly 375 million US dollars) in construction. The hospital, which lists around 10,000 beds, has been dubbed as “the biggest hospital in the universe” by Chinese netizens.
It was reported that the hospital received 4.76 million outpatients over the past year and performed surgical operations on 210,000 patients. A maximum of 20,000 patients visiting outpatient clinics on a single day had been registered.
The World Health Organization does not keep a list of hospitals by bed numbers; however West China Hospital, in southwestern province of Sichuan, is largely believed to be the biggest with 4,800 beds, followed by the Clinical Centre of Serbia with 3,470 beds available.
Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan has 9,000 beds, but the number covers the hospital’s capacity across its five branches.
According to henan.qq.com, a local news website, the three compounds will closely cooperate with one another and establish frequent communication with hospitals in Beijing.
