The Confucius Institute in Addis Ababa has held a Chinese proficiency competition.

The initiative aims to foster cultural ties between China and Ethiopia and provide learning opportunities.

15 contestants from across East Africa were in the running. They spoke in Chinese about Sino-African relations, and took part in talent shows highlighting their understanding of Chiense culture.

The event is organised annually by the Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Chinese embassy in Ethiopia. The regional winner is invited to participate in the finals, which are held in China.

Winnder, Mikias Gebre exclaimed that she was incredibly happy to be a part of the competition, and to do so well.

“I think these students were very good at the performance,” said Zhou En, a judge of the Chinese Bridge Competition.

“Though not many of them have [a] wide knowledge in the Chinese language. we hope that they will learn once in China. Their performance was very good and it means that the Chinese teachers are working hard.

“We hope that eventually this competition will help foster the friendship between China and Ethiopia.”
