The Kenya Overseas Chinese Association delivered the donations at a Chinese restaurant in the capital, Nairobi, pledging to do even more to uplift the lives of those in need.
“We are delighted today, to announce the formation of this organization which we are celebrating today,” the association’s Secretary General Zhao Jian said during the event. “This is part of our efforts to ensure the association keeps donating to the poor and needy even more.”
Among the donations delivered by the Kenya Overseas Chinese Association included bales of flour, cooking oil, sugar among other foodstuffs.
“Our desire to donate is part of measures to strengthen the ties between Kenya and China which started 55 years ago,” Zhao said.
On his part, the association’s Chairman Guo Wenchang said he takes pride in donating to the needy, “this is not the beginning and it will not be the end.”
The Kenya Overseas Chinese Association was founded in 2005 by a group of Overseas Chinese who have been working and residing in Kenya, with the aim of promoting the exchange of information and culture between the two countries.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of China-Kenya diplomatic relations.
Kenya is home to over 400 Chinese enterprises, which have in turn provided employment to nearly 130,000 Kenyans.
In a show of strong cooperation between China and Kenya, presidents Xi Jinping and Uhuru Kenyatta have met three times in the past three years.
Before the FOCAC summit earlier this year, President Kenyatta hailed his country’s “strategic and comprehensive partnership” with China, also urging for even better relations in the future.
“Kenya is satisfied with the tremendous progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation, and continues to open up new areas of cooperation,” he said.
