Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi meets DPRK counterpart in Beijing

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his counterpart from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Ri Yong Ho, Tuesday afternoon in Beijing, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wang said during the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un’s successful visit to China last week, leaders of the two countries have reached important consensus on the development of China-DPRK relations as well as the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the peninsula.

Maintaining and developing the traditional friendship between China and DPRK is important for two countries and the region, Wang said, adding that two sides should enhance exchanges at all levels.

Ri said the summit last week has provided important opportunity for development of bilateral relations. DPRK is willing to implement the outcome of the summit, to increase high-level communications and exchanges at all levels, to inherit and develop traditional good relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, Wang expressed China’s appreciation of the DPRK’s recent efforts on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and support for the DPRK’s two upcoming summits with the Republic of Korea, and later with the US.

The DPRK will also keep close and strategic communication with China on relevant issues on the Korean Peninsula, as indicated by the direction set by the leaders of both countries who met in Beijing last week, Ri added.
