Chinese built hospital transforming healthcare in Sierra Leone
It’s an ordinary Monday morning, although there is still some time before outpatient services begin, a crowd of patients has already began to form. They are waiting to see Dr. Kanu, the director of the hospital, who has studied in China for almost 10 years.
“This hospital is the best in Sierra Leone, because people know the Chinese medical team works here, and we have different varieties of equipment such as the CT scanner, X-ray, B ultrasound, and we also have an laboratory which can conduct many experiment. ” Said Dr. Alex Kanu, Director of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital
The hospital receives 50 to 80 patients every day. Because of the lack of adequate local doctors, members of the Chinese medical team constitute the main personnel in this hospital.
“Sierra Leone is short of doctors seriously. During the period of Ebola, we have even lost some doctors, about 12. So we really don’t have enough local doctors now here in this hospital. We are very thankful that the Chinese medical team can come here. We are also grateful for this arrangement by the Chinese government.” Said Dr. Alex Kanu, Director of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital
Doctor Tan Hao is the leader of the 17th batch of Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone. Since his team’s arrival last April, he and his colleagues have been busy with reforming the hospital as well as performing daily diagnostic duties.
“First we should be good at the basic medical treatment which can benefit local people most directly. And then we should strengthen our visions, bringing good Chinese medical technique and management experience to Sierra Leone step by step. ” Dr. Tan Hao, leader of the 17th batch of Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone
Because of the good treatment and service, the hospital draws patients from Sierra Leone and even beyond the country’s borders.
China recently decided to increase the personnel in each batch of a medical team, from 10 to 20, from the year 2016. The latest team, arrived in February.
