China has pledged to implement and safeguard the Iran nuclear deal following Tuesday’s withdrawal of the U.S. by President Donald Trump.
Trump labelled the 2015 accord signed under the Barack Obama administration as being “defective at its core.”
“This was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made,” Trump said.
“It didn’t bring calm, it didn’t bring peace, and it never will.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry however came out to defend the deal, saying it helped promote peace in the Middle East.
“At the moment, safeguarding the integrity and seriousness of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is helpful to uphold the current international non-proliferation regime. It also helps promote peace and stability in the Middle East. All parties should strengthen dialogue and coordination, settle the disputes properly and perform their obligations consistently. China will maintain close talks with relevant parties objectively and fairly. It will also continue to implement and safeguard the JCOPA,” Geng Shuang from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
