China partners with Kenya in monthly cleanup exercise
More than 200 Chinese nationals on Saturday joined residents of Nairobi in Kenyan capital’s monthly clean-up campaign drive.
Led by Nairobi’s Governor Sonko and minister counsellor of the Chinese Embassy Li Xuhang, hundreds of residents heeded the governors call to turn out in large numbers to beautify the city.
Speaking in Komarock during the exercise, Xuhang said that the Chinese government has offered to provide working tools, heavy machinery equipment and trucks.
The Chinese embassy also donated $5,000 for purchase of working tools for volunteers who participate in the Nairobi monthly clean-up campaign.
“As Chinese community, we are happy to have joined the Governor in this exercise and we promise to be doing this more often because we also feel we belong to this city and it needs to be clean for everyone,” Xuhang said.
Sonko welcomed the move by the Chinese government and appealed to Nairobi residents to continue turning out in large numbers in all the 85 wards within the county during the monthly campaigns.
“I want to thank the Chinese government for their kind gesture by donating machinery and financial support towards the Nairobi monthly clean-up campaign. Stern action will be taken against those residents and industrial firms found dumping garbage in undesignated areas,” the governor said.
The cleanup initiative came to effect in July 2018 and the cleaning is done once every month in different regions in Nairobi.
