China, Gambia agree to enhance ties

China and The Gambia have agreed to enhance cooperation on range of sectors including agricultural technology, fishery processing, infrastructure development and tourism.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said on Friday said the cooperation between the two countries will benefit both sides which resumed formal diplomatic links in 2016.

“China will consider Gambia’s national conditions and characteristics and give full play to the complementarity of our two countries,” Li said.

He said his country would continue to provide support and assistance for Gambia’s economic and social development.

He also said China hoped that the African nation would firmly uphold the one-China policy.

Li said his country will advance ties with The Gambia on the basis of mutual respect and treating each other on an equal footing.

The announcement came following a meeting between presidents Xi Jinping and Adama barrow in Beijing.

Barrow is the first Gambian leader to visit China since the two countries resumed formal relations.

Barrow said The Gambia will adhere to the one-China policy and work with China to strengthen cooperation to open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
