Read < 1 minute

The People’s Republic of China and the Solomon Islands on Saturday signed a joint communiqué in Beijing on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The agreement was struck on the basis of the One-China principle.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed the agreement on behalf of his country while Solomon Islands’ Foreign Minister Jeremiah Manele represented the South Pacific islands.

The Solomon Islands, consisting of over 900 islands, is a sovereign state in Oceania with a population of over 600,000 people.

The signing of diplomatic relations between China and the Solomon Islands came after the latter announced on Monday that it had severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

A few days later, the Pacific nation of Kiribati also announced a similar move, leaving Taiwan with only 15 allies.
