Chelsea FC on Friday night won the 2016/17 English Premier League after narrowly beating West Bromwich Albion by a solitary goal courtesy of Michy Batshuayi, earning manager Antonio Conte his first title with the club.
The win means the London side now has five Premier League titles, adding to their old First Division success in 1955.
Having looked rather frustrated at the Hawthorns, Chelsea had to rely on the £33million Belgian striker to find the back of the net after a Cesar Azpilicueta low cross in the 82nd minute.
Conte praised his side after the win, saying the season has been a great one, but he still wants the FA Cup win against Arsenal.
“We were not lucky, we did a great job. It is a great season, but to be a fantastic season we have to win the FA Cup,” the Italian said.
The 47-year-old becomes the fourth Italian to achieve the feat in the English top-flight, just one year after Claudio Ranieri masterminded Leicester City’s incredible triumph.
Conte became the first manager in history to win three successive Manager of the Month awards as he scooped the prize in October, November and December.
The latest trophy triumph represents the seventh piece of silverware to be collected during Conte’s illustrious managerial career.
The Blues now have to beat Arsenal at Wembley on May 27, to complete the double.
The battles that now remain in the PL are the relegation struggle and the top four finish.
Chelsea will now look forward to a triumphant homecoming on Monday night when they host Watford.
Although they are likely to receive a ceremonial guard of honour from the Hornets ahead of the game, they will not receive the trophy. Instead they must wait until next Sunday’s final game of the season when they entertain relegated Sunderland.
