Ghana on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of former captain Charles Kwabla Akonnor as its new national team coach, replacing Kwesi Appiah.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), however, did not give details of the duration of Akonnor’s appointment. It also named David Duncan as Akonnor’s assistant.
Earlier this month, the GFA sacked the coaches of all its men’s and women’s national teams. It brought to an end Appiah’s second reign as the national team coach. He was appointed a second time in 2017 following a two-year stint between 2012-2014.
The GFA President, Kurt Okraku, had promised to “build a new association” following allegations of bribery and corruption in a documentary filmed by an investigative journalist.
Under Appiah, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after playing in the three previous editions and was eliminated in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations last year — their earliest exit since 2006.
Akonnor, who was briefly an assistant to Appiah, has previously managed Ghanaian clubs Ashanti Gold, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
The GFA also announced the appointment of head coaches, technical staff and management committees for the other national teams. Mercy Efua Tagoe-Quarcoo was named head coach of the senior women’s team, the Black Queens while Paa Kwesi Fabin was named head coach of the under-23 team, the Black Meteors.
The GFA said that Okraku and members of the Executive Council will meet all newly appointed head coaches of the various national teams and their assistants on Friday to introduce them to the new GFA leadership and discuss upcoming assignments.
The meeting will also discuss the desired support from the GFA by the national teams to ensure their success in competitions.
