CHAN 2018: Sudan beats Libya to win third place

Sudan beat Libya in post match penalties to win the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) third place play off.

Goalkeeper Akram El Hadi saved two penalties as the East African side beat the one time champions from North Africans 4-2 in Saturday’s match played in Marrakech, Morocco.

Walaa Mohamed had opened the scoring for Sudan in the eighth minute from Taher’s Elhag’s cross from the right, but substitute Salem Ablo equalized for Libya with six minutes to play in normal time.

The two sides settled for a draw after extra time, forcing a penalty shoot-out.

Sudan’s shot-stopper Akram proved to be the difference, earning his side the third place, the highest Sudan has even reached in the continental competition.

The goalkeeper saved the kicks of Elmehdi Elhouni and Ablo with Taher, Atahir Babikir, Ahmed Mahmoud and substitute Abdelrahman Maaz scoring for the Sudanese side. Libyan duo Moftah Taktak and substitute Abdelsalam Alaqoub converted their kicks.

The final game of the tournament pits host Morocco against West African giants Nigeria with bBoth sides seeking a first CHAN win.

The game will be played at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca from 1900GMT.
