CECAFA female referee breaking down male-dominated domain
Football officiating has always been a predominantly all-male affair.
But that is changing within the East and Central region.
The regional body CECAFA is now giving more female referees the opportunity to earn the recognition to be on the field more. The recently concluded CECAFA women’s championship featured ten female officials who were handed the chance to learn and test their knowledge in officiating. The female referees and assistants from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania took charge of thirteen games at the tournament.
Already regional officials are impressed with the strides being made and are seeking to continue growing the numbers for female referees.
