A car bomb killed seven people and injured scores others when it went off in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, police said on Thursday.

It is not yet clear who carried out the bombing, though Islamist militant group al-Shabaab is known to conduct such attacks in the country.

“I have counted seven dead bodies of civilians,” Reuters news agency quotess Major Nur Hussein, a police officer, to say.

Hussein said the car exploded just as a minibus carrying civilians was passing by.  He added that the death toll is likely to rise.

Somalia has been dogged by conflict waged by al-Shabaab, which seeks to enforce a strict Sharia-based system of governance.

The war has killed thousands and displaced millions in the Horn of Africa.
