Cameroon and Liverpool defender Joel Matip was on Monday named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Premier League Player of the Month for September.

Matip, 28, beat five other players in an online vote. The contenders were Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson, Leicester City’s Ricardo Pereira and Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez.

Matip featured in Liverpool’s three Premier League games in September, against Newcastle United, Chelsea and Sheffield United, all of which they won.

Matip won 25 aerial duels and made 213 accurate passes.

German Bundesliga side Schalke 04, Matip’s former club, joined other Liverpool fans in congratulating the Cameroonian for his accolade.

Matip missed Liverpool’s last two games, one in the UEFA Champions League and another in the Premier League, due to a slight knock during the game against Sheffield United.
