Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng dies after on-pitch collapse
Cameroon and Dinamo Bucharest midfielder Patrick Ekeng has died aged 26 of a suspected heart attack after collapsing on the pitch during Friday’s game against Viitorul.
Ekeng came off the bench in the 62nd minute only to fall on the floor in the 70th minute of a televised Romanian league match.
The Cameroonian received CPR for 90 minutes before being pronounced dead two hours later, with his passing later confirmed in a post on Dinamo Bucharest’s Facebook page with the words: “We have no words to express our sadness at the loss.”
The Cameroonian FA also confirmed the news on Twitter.
Play resumed after Ekeng’s collapse and the game was completed.
As a result, the Romanian Football Federation has suspended all football activities in the country, including the Romanian Cup final between Dinamo and CFR Cluj initially scheduled for Tuesday.
Ekeng had also previously played for hometown club Canon Yaounde before moving to Europe to play for Le Mans, Rodez, Lausanne Sport and Cordoba before signing for Dinamo at the start of 2016.
In 2003, Cameroon international midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe died after collapsing during a Confederations Cup match against Colombia in France.
