The Cameroonian government says 162 Boko Haram militants were killed over the weekend when its soldiers retook Nigeria’s northeastern town of Goshi from the militants.
Reports also say that about 100 other people held by the militants, including Cameroonians and Nigerians, were freed by the country’s special forces. The Cameroonian government also added that two members of Cameroon’s military were killed in the operation. The two, including a senior commander, were reported killed after their convoy hit a vehicle Sunday.
The operation which took place from February 11 to February 14 destroyed several bomb factories and two training centers in the former Boko Haram stronghold with vehicles, weapons and ammunition being seized.
It took place under the banner of the multinational task force, and with intelligence and operational coordination with Nigerian forces, he said.
Amnesty International says Nigerian-based Boko Haram has killed more than 20 000 people in its six-year insurgency.
Attacks across Nigeria’s borders increased by the extremists last year in countries such as Cameroon who are contributing to a multinational force to combat Boko Haram.
