Former Portuguese footballer Antonio Conceicao da Silva Oliveira has been appointed as head coach of the Cameroon national men’s football team, the Indomitable Lions, the country’s Ministry of Sports announced on Friday.
Oliveira replaces Dutchman Clarence Seedorf who was sacked by the Cameroon Football Federation in July after the defending champions were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Nigeria in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
One of Oliveira’s main duties will be preparing the national side for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which they will host.
The 57-year-old Portuguese has previously coached in Cyprus, Portugal, Romania and Saudi Arabia.
Former Cameroonian international Francois Omam Biyick will be an assistant to Oliveira, according to Sports Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi.
Biyick was part of the national team set up in a similar position under Javier Clemente between 2010 and 2011.
Another former player, Jacques Songo’o, will serve as the goalkeepers’ trainer.
Cameroon is set to play a friendly against Tunisia at the Stade Olympique de Radès in Rades on October 12.
