The president of the Confederation of African Football Ahmad Ahmad was released from police custody without charges, the continental body announced on Friday.
Ahmad has been arrested on 6 June in Paris where he was attending a FIFA Congress. He was questioned in connection with alleged misappropriation of $830,000.
“The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), questioned in Paris on June 6th by the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption and Financial and Fiscal Offences (OCLCIFF), was released from police custody without charges, the Marseille Prosecutor, Mr Xavier Tarabeux, announced on Friday at Agence France Presse.
In April, former CAF Secretary-General Amr Fahmy accused Ahmad Ahmad of alleged bribery and misappropriation of funds after awarding a contract to a French company called Tactical Steel. Fahmy was fired from the organization shortly after making the allegations.
Ahmad denied the accusations, claiming all the decisions were made “collegially” and that the process was “transparent”.
Sabine Seillier, president of Tactical Steel, also reiterated that her company won the contract on a transparent basis. She noted that her company was the only one that could guarantee delivery of the equipment CAF sought in a tight timeframe of three weeks.
Ahmad’s arrest came just three weeks before the Africa Cup of Nations begins in Egypt.
