CAF holds draw for 2022 World Cup African preliminary qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football on Monday held a draw for the preliminary round of the African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Qatar.

The draw, held at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, involved 28 teams which are ranked lowest in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Ranking released in July.

The two-leg preliminary matches will be played between September 2 and September 10 2019.

The teams from Pot 2 were drawn to play the first leg at home while the teams from Pot 1 will host the second leg.

The winners of the preliminary round will join the continent’s 26 exempted teams in the group stage of the qualifiers.

There will be 10 groups of four teams. The group winners will then be drawn to play against each other in a two-legged tie with the five winners eventually advancing to represent Africa at the World Cup.

Liberia v Sierra Leone
