Burundi: Two more people killed in Bujumbura

Read < 1 minute

Two people have been killed in new protests in Burundi against the president’s re-election bid.

The protests started peacefully on Monday morning but got out of hand when protesters started attacking police with stones.

The protests are over President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term.

The protests resumed in Burundi’s capital Monday after a weekend pause as thousands continued to protest the president’s decision to seek a third term.

It is the biggest unrest Burundi has seen since a civil war ended in 2005.

Under Burundi’s constitution, presidents can only be elected to two terms in office, but Mr Nkurunziza’s allies say his first term does not count as he was appointed by parliament.

Protesters want to force President Pierre Nkurunzinza to withdraw his bid for a third term, which many see as a violation of the Arusha Agreement that ended a civil war which left more than 250,000 people dead.
