Burundi league champions Messager de Ngozi conclude season with a win
Le Messager de Ngozi finished the season with a victory following a 3-2 win against Olympic Star on Wednesday as Burundi’s top-flight league came to a conclusion.
Le Messager de Ngozi ended top with 64 points, eight ahead of second-placed Musongati, who lost 3-2 to Bujumbura City in their final game. Former champions Aigle Noir finished third with 48 points, the same as Dynamik and Flambeau du Centre. Aigle Noir secured a top-three position by virtue of its superior goal difference.
Le Messager de Ngozi had already secured the Burundi Primus Ligue title after a 3-0 win against Inter Star 3-0 at the Stade Urukundo in Mwumba while Musongati, their closest rivals, could only draw 1-1 with Kayanza United in the penultimate game of the season on Saturday.
Le Messager de Ngozi will now turn its attention to the qualification process for the CAF Champions League.
Lydia Ludic, Ngozi City and Les Lierres were relegated having finished 14th, 15th and 16th respectively. Lydia Ludic was unable to escape the drop despite registering a 3-2 win against Kayanza as the team they could ideally overhaul, Bumamuru, also won. However, due to an inferior goal difference than Bumamuru, Lydia Ludic’s seal was all but sealed before the final game.
Burundi was the only African country not to suspend its domestic football season due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Competition, however, was halted for a month to allow political rallies to be held in stadiums ahead of general elections on May 20.
