Burundi’s government will attend this weekend’s regional talks in Tanzania, aimed at ending a year-long cycle of violence that has claimed about 450 lives and displaced thousands of people.
Government spokesman Willi Nyamitwe said the government had received an invitation, and that it will go.
Mediated by the East African Community (EAC), a regional body of which Burundi is a member, the talks have been repeatedly postponed since a first meeting in December, with the government refusing to share a table with what it considers insurgent groups.
Burundi descended into conflict in April 2015 after President Pierre Nkurunziza declared his bid for a controversial third term in office, one which he went onto win in the July poll.
