Burundi banished from accessing the American Markets
Burundi has been ejected from the agreement (AGOA) that African nations has with the America to access the United States market. This was announced by President Barack Obama, who also said that the measures will be effective from January next year. The action against Burundi is a step being taken as a part of continued crack down on opposition members.
At least 200 people have been killed in the violence that began in Burundi following President Pierre Nkurunziza’s election into office for a third term earlier this year.
Burundi negligible exports to the United States valued to be several million dollars however even the disruption the business will have significant impact on the east African country, with the economy set to decline this year according to the International Monetary Fund.
The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a United States Trade Act that boosts market access for Sub- Saharan countries to the United States. The act was made public law in 2000 and has been renewed to 2025.
