Burkina Faso interim president Michel Kafando to take back power
Burkina Faso may revert to civilian rule as early as today.
Following a breakthrough in talks on Saturday, led by Benin President Thomas Boni Yayi and Senegalese President Macky Sall, the mediation team announced the possibility of making a major announcement to ‘issue the good news to the world’.
If this happens, Michel Kafando will be reinstated as the leader of the interim government until elections are held successfully for new leaders to be elected.
Boni Yayi made the announcement after the mediation team met with the coup leader Gen Gilbert Diendere in Ouagadougou.
Gen Diendere was the chief of staff to former president Blaise Compaore, deposed in a popular uprising last October.
Since the coup that was successfully staged on Thursday, at least 10 people have been killed and more than 100 others injured in the clashes that have rocked the country.
The coup was quickly condemned by the US and France, and the African Union as well suspended Burkina Faso.
Elections in the West African country are due to be held on 11 October.
The Junta leaders have since said that Mr. Kafando has been freed and is in good health.
The head of the army, Gen Pingrenoma Zagre, had issued a statement earlier on Saturday condemning the violence against civilians and calling on the military to be professional.
He urged the people to trust the armed forces to resolve the crisis.
