Buhari threatens to ban hijabs if suicide bombing persists
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari says that his government my ban the use of hijab by Muslim women, arguing that female suicide bombers allied to Boko Haram often conceal explosives beneath the hijabs.
Buhari said this during the presidential media chat he held on Thursday.
“Hijab would have to be banned if suicide bombing continues,” the president said.
The hijab is a veil that covers the head and chest, and is often worn by some Muslim women beyond the age of puberty in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate families. According to some interpretations, it is also to be worn in the presence of adult non-Muslim females outside of their immediate families.
