The family of British aristocrat, Jack Marrian, have expressed shock at his arrest on suspicion of trafficking nearly 100kgs of cocaine into Kenya, stressing that his innocence is “palpable and obvious” reports the Guardian.

The grandson of the sixth earl of Cawdor, Jack Marrian, has been accused by the Kenyan authorities of attempting to import drugs worth 2.2 million sterling pounds in shipping containers. The 31 year old who is a sugar trader will know on Monday if he will be granted bail or not.

Jack Marrian’s mother told the Guardian that his arrest has stunned his family and left them ‘incredibly distressed’

Lady Emma Campbell said: “[He] cannot possibly have had anything to do with the drugs. We are all hoping the legal system will find it fair to give Jack bail, so he can continue to assist the Kenyan police with their enquiries.

Emma further added that Marrian has been cooperating with the police, providing all documents pertaining to the anti-narcotics division personally.

The 100kg cocaine haul was found by Kenyan police and US Drug Enforcement Agency officials in containers destined for Uganda as sugar that had arrived from Brazil at the main Kenyan seaport at Mombasa last week.

According to the Guardian, the prosecution has said that is found documents on the ship used to transport the cargo that named Marrian as a director of Mshale Uganda Ltd, the firm that was to receive the containers. The maximum penalty for drug trafficking in Kenya is a life sentence and a fine of more than $10,000 (£7,600).
