Security ministers from China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa are gathered in Durban to hold discussions on security and preparations for the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg in July.
Among the agenda of the meeting include cyber security, international terrorism and organised crime.
South Africa’s state security minister Dipuo Letsatsi Duba said the BRICS security core wants to strengthen cooperation on these matters.
He added that there’s an acute awareness of emerging threats of radicalization and extremism that the BRICS countries must be cognizant of.
The ministers and senior leaders here say their gathering also provides an opportunity to advance BRICS agenda through security issues and promote peace in their respective regions, as the world continues to face security issues threatening many country’s sovereignties, including the BRICS countries.
In their opening remarks before getting on with the meeting, the officials emphasized that joint efforts between the BRICS countries will ensure the borders are secure and any threats alleviated.
The meeting will run until Friday and the outcomes will be announced then.
