South American nations are scheduled to hold a meeting on the Amazon forests fires that have been raging for weeks.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday those countries would meet to determine a common policy in defense of the Amazon, and took another swipe at the G7 group of rich nations for its offer of $20 million aid.
After a meeting with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Pinera in Brasilia, Bolsonaro said Brazil would accept an offer from Chile of four aircraft to help combat the Amazon rainforest fires.
The number of fires recorded across the Brazilian Amazon has risen 79% this year through Aug. 25, according to Brazil’s space research agency.
The fires are not limited to Brazil, with at least 10,000 square kilometers (about 3,800 square miles) burning in Bolivia, near its border with Paraguay and Brazil.
