Brazil declares an end to national emergency over Zika virus

Brazil has declared an end to a national emergency over the Zika virus after a sharp decrease in cases.
A statement by the health ministry said that the county has informed the World Health Organisation, citing “the decrease in cases of Zika and microcephaly throughout the country.”
The number of cases dropped 95% between January and April, compared to the same period a year ago, health ministry said.
Zika virus causes babies to be born with microcephaly, or abnormally small heads.
The World Health Organisation declared the mosquito-borne Zika virus no longer an international public health emergency in November.
The infection has been linked to birth defects in almost 30 countries, including microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and restricted brain development.
According to the health ministry no deaths related to the virus have been reported this year in the country.
