Brazil becomes first team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup
Brazil became the first nation to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after the Seleção cruised past Paraguay in a World Cup Qualification match on Tuesday to take them to 33 points in the CONMEBOL Qualification table.
The Brazilians won the match 3-0, courtesy of goals from Philippe Coutinho, Neymar and Marcelo.
The win was the Seleção’s eight consecutive victory in the qualification games and, combined with Peru’s 2-1 win over Uruguay in a later game, ensured they would finish the 10-nation group in the top four, guaranteeing them a berth at the Russia finals.
With four games still to play, Brazil now stands 9 points clear of second placed Colombia.
Brazil will be hoping to carry their rich vein of form to next year’s showpiece, and will be aiming to better the semi-final finish from the 2014 event, when Germany humiliated them 7-1 on home soil.
In their run of eight consecutive wins, the Brazilians have conceded just two goals.
This form is mostly attributed to coach Tite, who replaced Dunga at the helm of the Seleção.
