Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Tuesday announced that his country will support Kenya’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the period 2021-2022.
President Masisi made the announcement at a joint press briefing at State House in the Kenyan capital Nairobi as he began a three-day state visit.
“Botswana will vote before Kenya votes itself in. This is out of a desire to further nourish our friendship because we trust you with your willingness to engage with our issues that need broad discussions at the United Nations,” President Masisi said.
There will be two seats available for Africa when the General Assembly meets in New York in September.
Additionally, Kenya and Botswana signed three agreements on bilateral trade, air transport and ICT following bilateral talks between the two presidents.
President Kenyatta also said Kenya is keen on expanding both nations’ areas of cooperation to include agribusiness, livestock breeding, manufacturing, minerals and the mining sector, livestock breeding, trade and tourism promotion.
President Kenyatta also welcomed investors from Botswana to survey emerging opportunities in trade and investment in Kenya. President Kenyatta said he was pleased with efforts to strengthen existing bilateral ties and attract various investments from Kenya to Botswana, including financial services, agro-processing and ICT.
