Bomb explosion rocks University of Maiduguri in Nigeria
A lecturer at the University of Maiduguri reported dead, and may others feared to have been killed in twin explosions that rocked the University of Maiduguri in Maiduguri city in Borno State in northeast Nigeria early Monday morning according to local media reports.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, Boko Haram terrorists are believed to be behind the attack. The first time the terrorists have carried out a major attacked at the university since the insurgency began over seven years ago.
According to the Premium Times, a source within the university said the first blast occurred at a mosque within the staff quarters at the time Muslim worshippers were busy concluding the early Morning Prayer while the second attack is said to have happened near the university’s 5th gate usually used by pedestrians.
“Yes, I can confirm there was an explosion within the premises of University of Maiduguri during the early morning prayers by the Muslim faithful, details is still been awaited.” Said the Borno State Police Command Victor Isuku, spokesman confirming the attack without giving much details
Security forces have been mobilized to the scene of the attack but there is no official confirmation of casualties
