Boko Haram attack leaves at least seven soldiers dead in Chad

Read < 1 minute

At least seven soldiers are reported to have been killed in an attack by extremist militant group Boko Haram in Chad.

The raid was conducted at night in the Lake Chad area, and also left some 15 other soldiers wounded.

The military however says it repelled the attack and killed 63 militants, though there is no independent confirmation of this.

Last month more than 20 Chadian soldiers were killed by Boko Haram, in one of its deadliest attacks in the country.

Boko Haram has waged years of war in West Africa, seeking to enforce an extremist jihadist system of governance.

The war has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions others, creating humanitarian crisis in some areas.

Collective military efforts by armies from West African countries have forced the militants into hiding, though they still manage to stage attacks occasionally.

Crushing Boko haram remains a key focus for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
