Bobi Wine urges fans against boycotting national football team
Ugandan pop musician turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has urged his countrymen to continue supporting the national team, following plans by a section of his fans to boycott attending the team’s matches after he was denied permit to hold a concert at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Kyagulanyi had planned to hold a music concert at the stadium, but the show was cancelled by the stadium’s authorities.
The concert was initially scheduled for October 20, but the authorities scrapped it saying the venue had already been booked for a wedding reception.
The MP’s promoters went on to postpone the show till November 9, but they again denied permit, as the authorities said holding a music concert there exposed the stadium to degradation, which may prompt the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to dock Uganda points in its qualification matches for the 2019 AFCON.
This sparked protests by Kyagulanyi’s fans on social media, as they rallied for a boycott of the national team in retaliation.
Under the hashtag #BoycottUgandaCranes, they demanded that the Uganda Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) allow Kyagulanyi to hold the concert or they stop supporting the national team.
This caught the attention of the MP, who took to social media to calm his fans down, asking them not to boycott the national side. He promised to announce a new date in the coming days.
