Bishop calls for compensation for South African miners killed in 2012
In London, a South African bishop has led protests against mining giant Lonmin outside the company’s AGM. It comes amid accusations Lonmin hasn’t done enough for the 34 miners shot dead in South Africa’s Marikana area in 2012. The names of the victims were read out by retired Bishop Johannes Seoka, punctuated by the sound of gunshots.
Protestors are demanding an apology from the company, a monument erected in memory of the dead miners, increased compensation for their families, and better facilities for remaining Lonmin employees. Activists say the mining staff continue to live in primitive conditions without access to basic services.
