Bead Making women of the Mara
Beads are an integral part of the Maasai women throughout Kenya.
It is common to see women from the Maasai community donned in colorful beads on various parts of their bodies like neck, ankle, forehead, ears, waist and wrist.
Interestingly, most of the women never buy the beads they don, but rather, they make them.
In the outskirts of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, it is common to see women selling similar beads to the visiting tourists who most often go there to see the great Mara Migration.
This way, they are able to make a living to buy necessities and take their children to school.
To alleviate themselves even higher, the women have come together to form society groups to help them benefit from the tourism even more.
Sales are better during the great Mara Migration since tourists flock the Mara in their thousands.
