The South African Women’s Senior National team striker, Portia Modise has retired from international football.
The Banyana Banyana legend announced her retirement on Tuesday, May 19 at the SAFA house in Nasrec by the South African Football Association.
The Soweto born veteran striker Modise is the only female footballer to have scored 102 goals for her country.
Banyana head coach, Vera Pauw said: “We will miss her but we must respect that there comes a moment that a player realizes she has to make another step in life”.
Modise retired so as to pursue a coaching career. SAFA’s president Danny Jordan has also announced that she will also henceforth be engaged as a brand ambassador for South African football.
Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Modise said she is proud and humbled of her achievement and that her new role as ambassador would help other women pursue their dreams.
