Banyana Banyana striker Thembi Kgatlana became the latest South African female footballer to make a high-profile move in Europe after she signed for Spanish Primera División side SD Eibar.

Kgatlana joins from Portuguese champions SL Benfica whom she left earlier this month despite only joining in January on a two-and-a-half year deal.

On July 15, the 24-year-old announced on Twitter that he time at the Portuguese side had come to an end without elaborating why.

She played three times for Benfica in all competitions and scored three times.

Kgatlana, a former CAF Women’s Player of the Year winner, has previously played for Beijing BG Phoenix in China and Houston Dash in the United States.

Kgatlana has represented South Africa at the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in 2018 and the Women’s World Cup in France last year, where she scored the team’s only goal of the tournament.

Eibar was one of two teams promoted from the Segunda División Pro to the Primera División after the Royal Spanish Football Federation ended the season early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
