Banyana Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe joins Portugal’s SC Braga
South African footballer Jermaine Seoposenwe signed for Portuguese Campeonato Nacional Feminino club SC Braga after leaving Spanish side Real Betis.
Seoposenwe, whose six-month contract at Betis ran out, joins the Portuguese side on a two-year contract.
She was unable to get sufficient playing time as the COVID-19 pandemic struck and saw the women’s league suspended before it was eventually cancelled in May. She managed to feature in just three matches: two in the Primera Iberdrola (Spain’s top-tier women’s league) and one in the Copa de la Reina.
The 26-year-old took to Twitter to express her delight at joining the 2019 Portuguese champions saying she was ready to “get to work and win some titles”.
Happy to announce that I have joined @SCBragaOficial . Looking forward to this new journey and a chance to make a positive impact. Want to thank everyone that played a role in making this happen! Here’s to a LONG and prosperous time in BRAGA…Time to get to work✊🏾🙌🏾😉🔴⚪️ pic.twitter.com/kc2wDvHLzR

Seoposenwe is expected to be one of a number of signings for Braga who are in the process of rebuilding their squad following the departure of several players. Last season, they were third in the league behind Benfica and Sporting Lisbon before it was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Another South African, 24-year-old striker and 2018 CAF Women’s Player of the Year Thembi Kgatlana, plays for Benfica.
Seoposenwe has also previously played for Lithuanian side Gintra Universitetas with whom she signed her first professional contract and scored six goals in eight appearances for the team.
Internationally, she has represented South Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
