Banyana Banyana flies to US for a friendly
The South Africa national women’s football team flew out on Monday to the United States for a friendly against the defending world champions scheduled for Sunday at the Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The match will kick off at 13h45 local time (22h45 South African time).
This will be the second time the two teams play each other. The US Women’s national team beat South Africa, 1-0, at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2016.
The match serves as part of Banyana Banyana’s preparations for their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held from 7 June to 7 July in France.
South Africa will be missing the services of Linda Motlhalo, Thembi Kgatlana and Leandra Smeda due to club commitments.
South Africa will be playing their eighth international friendly having already faced Sweden, the Netherlands, Korea DPR, Czech Republic, Finland (twice) and Jamaica.
The team had assembled for their week-long training camp on Monday, April 29.
The President of the South African Football Association, Danny Jordaan, was on hand at the O.R. Tambo International Airport to see off the team.
South Africa is in Group B with Germany, Spain and China. Africa’s other representatives at the tournament are Nigeria and Cameroon.
