Ban Ki-moon concerned by escalating violence in South Sudan

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged South Sudan’s government forces and armed groups to stop fighting and provide access to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNIMISS).

Ban said he is deeply concerned by the current escalation of violence between the government forces and armed groups in Wau town and surrounding areas.

“The Secretary-General calls on all fighting forces to immediately suspend the hostilities, provide access to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and cooperate with humanitarian partners to facilitate the delivery of assistance. He urges all parties to agree to dialogue to resolve their political disputes,” said a statement fromthe office of Mr. Ban’s spokesperson.

UNIMISS is in the process of deploying additional troops into the area to address possible contingencies.
