South African authorities have announced a multi-disciplinary tactical security plan to root out corruption and collusion at OR Tambo International airport.
There have been major concerns over security at that airport following a major heist earlier this year and other related crime incidents.
OR Tambo International Airport is the biggest and busiest airport in Africa. According to official statistics, in 2016 alone, 21 million passengers passed through this airport.
Because of the airport’s stature, South Africa’s police minister Fikile Mbalula said securing it is a paramount necessity.
“On this basis it remains the gateway to Africa as well as opens the door to millions of international guests visiting our country annually therefore it’s security is paramount importance to the South African Police as well as the country as a whole,” Mbalula said.
There have been major security related concerns lately including a major heist earlier this year.
Drugs and other goods are also being smuggled in. A new phenomenon includes criminals following people home from the airport and robbing them.
Now, the country’s authorities are conducting a major clean-up exercise to ensure safety in and around the airport.
Seven police officers, 34 information desk clerks and eight Gauteng tourism officials have been suspended in the on-going clean-up. State security will now also start vetting over 35 thousand OR Tambo International Airport staff and officials.
CCTV cameras will be installed in strategic areas in and around the airport and visible policing is set to be increased as well. All this, to restore OR Tambo International Airport’s security.
