AUC chairperson set to visit Khartoum
The chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Moussa Faki Mahamat is set to begin a three-day visit to Khartoum on Sunday, where he will hold talks over the Horn of Africa situation, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry said.
“The AU chairperson will commence his visit to hold official talks with Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour,” said the ministry in a statement.
The talks would focus on the situations in the Horn of Africa and issues of the African continent, the statement said.
Mahamat is scheduled to meet Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir and Prime Minister Bakri Hassan Saleh, it added.
The Chadian’s visit comes on the back of a meeting on peace, security, stability, cooperation and development in the Horn of Africa that was hosted in the Sudanese capital in October.
The meeting was organized by the AU in coordination with the East Africa bloc IGAD and the Sudanese government.
The visit also comes after Mahamat visited Morocco on 3 and 4 October, the first since the country’s widely welcomed return to the African Union.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir earlier this week welcomed his South Sudanese counterpart Salva Kiir to Khartoum where they held bilateral talks. The two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation between the two countries that were once one.
