The African Union Commission has welcomed the news from Juba, but is pushing both sides in South Sudan for more. Officials say Riek Machar’s re-appointment will open more doors to peace in South Sudan.
They also say there are plenty of challenges still ahead, and all sides need to dedicate themselves to dealing with those challenges.
Key for the AU is the formation of the government of national unity and the full implementation of the peace deal signed almost six months ago.
The war has been devastating for millions in South Sudan and the AU wants to see action now to revive the country rather than words.
Officials here have seen plenty of false dawns throughout the South Sudan conflict and are very wary of celebrating too soon.
